E numbers
All additives must undergo thorough testing to
ensue that they are safe to be used in foods. An E number shows
that an additive is permitted for use and authorised as safe by all
countries of the European Union. E numbers are a convenient way of
listing the less familiar ingredients in a product on soft drinks
packaging. Manufactures can name the additive in full or by their
allocated 'E' number or both.
Some ingredients may be traditionally used or simply more freely
available in certain countries than others. If the same taste
profile can be obtained by mixing different ingredients than those
used elsewhere, manufacturers may choose to use alternative
ingredients.
In addition, manufacturers may also wish to adjust the flavour
or colour of the product to meet local tastes. In terms of the
products produced in European Union countries, all the ingredients
will have been approved by the EU and meet the legal requirements
of the individual member states.
A full list of currently approved additives and their
corresponding E numbers can be found on the
FSA website.
