BSDA respond to DRS announcement in Scotland

Nicola Sturgeon today has unveiled her legislative programme for the coming year, in which the First Minister confirmed the introduction of a deposit return scheme in Scotland for bottles and cans.

Under such schemes, customers pay a surcharge when purchasing bottles or cans which will be refunded when they return them to a shop.

Gavin Partington, Director General at British Soft Drinks Association, comments:

“Deposit Return Systems do operate effectively in some countries and we remain open-minded about how this could work in the UK. The key issue is that we must all work together to increase recycling and reduce litter.

“All plastic bottles are 100 per cent recyclable so it is important that consumers are encouraged to dispose of bottles responsibly. The soft drink industry recognises more needs to be done.”
