Soft drinks and kidney function
In response to the Nurses’ Health Study,
undertaken in the US, suggesting a link between artificially
sweetened soft drinks and kidney function decline BSDA said:
“Scientific studies need to be reviewed by
independent experts and published by a scientific journal to assess
their accuracy. This study has not yet been assessed, nor is the
completed research available to the public so conclusions cannot be
drawn from the claims being made. The scientists have themselves
admitted that, “more study is needed.”
“The known major causes of chronic kidney
disease are diabetes and high blood pressure not drinking diet soft
drinks.
“People can continue to enjoy soft drinks as
part of a balanced diet and active lifestyle and should not be
concerned about the claims made in this US-based study.”
