Government plans deposit return scheme

Environment Secretary Michael Gove has confirmed plans to introduce a deposit return scheme (DRS) for single-use drinks containers.

In response to the announcement, Gavin Partington, Director General at British Soft Drinks Association, said:

“We welcome the opportunity to consider how a well-designed DRS could help to increase recycling rates and are ready to work with Government and others on this.”

Following receipt of the Voluntary and Economics Incentives Working Group report on single-use drinks containers, Defra will develop plans for a DRS which will be subject to consultation later this year.

Partington added:

“We agree with the recommendations of the Working Group that in order for a DRS to be effective, it would need to be UK-wide and that reform of the current compliance system would create greater transparency, and lead to increased investment in UK recycling infrastructure.”
