BSDA welcomes UK Govt commitment to DRS

The Environment Bill has been reintroduced to Parliament with new powers to boost the UK's domestic recycling system, including powers to create a deposit return scheme for drinks containers.

The bill was first introduced in October last year, but did not progress as the general election was called shortly afterwards.

British Soft Drinks Association director general Gavin Partington, said:

“We welcome today’s reintroduction of the Environment Bill to Parliament. The PET plastic bottles and cans used by UK soft drinks manufacturers are 100% recyclable, and we want to move towards a circular system to increase recycling. That’s why we support the introduction of a well-designed GB-wide deposit return scheme (DRS). It is reassuring to see Government reiterate its ambitions in this area.

"However, any DRS must be introduced alongside reform of the producer responsibility system for packaging. This needs to be addressed urgently.”
