Packaging

Packaging plays an essential role in protecting, delivering and preserving products and also in minimising product wastage.  The industry has historically looked for ways to reduce the amount of packaging used, whilst maintaining the primary function of this packaging, and have made significant achievements in this area.  However, we recognise that it is a process of continuous improvement and that there is still work to be done to address packaging and sustainability.  This is why we have set up an active working group to explore what we can do to work towards meeting the objectives we have set ourselves.

Objectives:

  • To proactively address the issue of littering of all items and look at how the soft drinks sector can work with other organisations to prevent and reduce it.  
  • RM packagingTo commit to benchmarking PET bottle recyclability each year to ensure that the whole sector is improving design to help increase quality and quantity of recycled PET.
  • To support ways to increase recycling and collection rates in order to improve resource security and efficient use of resources.
  • To contribute to the Courtauld Commitment 3 target of improving packaging design through the supply chain to maximise recycled content as appropriate, improve recyclability and deliver product protection to reduce food waste, while ensuring there is no increase in the carbon impact of packaging by 2015, from a 2012 baseline.

Whilst the focus of this area of work is packaging, we recognise that it is important to address the issue of litter within the roadmap.  It is an area of concern for the industry and one that is difficult to tackle on our own.  We believe it is important that all sectors whose products are littered, anti-litter campaigners and government bodies should work together to try to find a solution to this anti-social problem and we will continue to look at ways we can achieve this.  We therefore welcome Rory Stewart's announcement that he will set up a meeting in early 2016 to develop a Litter Strategy.

There is a pressing need to increase recycling and collection rates, for all materials (not just soft drinks packaging), and it’s important that consumers are made more aware of the benefits of recycling their packaging, which is why we have identified this as a key area to look at by the group.

We recognise that there needs to be a greater focus on the recyclability of packaging, to ensure the materials are able to be recycled back into new products. The majority of soft drinks packaging is recyclable but this is still an area where improvements can be made. That is why we are actively encouraging the industry to use WRAP’s PET bottle categorisation tool which should help companies identify where they can improve the recyclability of their PET bottles, which account for 68% of soft drinks packaging.
